The Blue-Green Design (BGD) approach synthesizing both Blue and Green elements in our infrastructure systems has been proposed to improve resilience of urban area to climate changes with multiple benefits. This research focuses on realization of the BGD approach within the scope of building design. Because designs of water system and greenery system are often handled by two different design teams with their own corresponding expertise, it is hard for each design team to fully consider interactions between two systems in their designs due to the knowledge gap between the two teams. Therefore, a design environment supporting multidisciplinary knowledge integration and collaboration is needed to better integrate the Blue and Green designs in the BGD approach and assess the design outcomes. To integrate designs among multidisciplinary design teams, the Building Information Modeling (BIM) software is used as a collaborative design platform for carrying out and analyzing Blue-Green designs. This research proposes a BIM-enabled BGD framework to assist architects to perform BGD on buildings in the Concept Design stage. The framework includes four modeling principles: requirement modeling, system modeling, performance modeling and process modeling. The corresponding modules for the modeling principles are Blue-Green requirements, BIM element models, customized design tools and a working manual. A case study is conducted using a combination of green roof and water tank systems as a BGD example to test and demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework. In addition, a scenario study is used to demonstrate the proposed design process. © 2018, Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering. All right reserved. |
