Abstract
The fabrication of 2D nanoparticle arrays with size and number density gradients on a flat surface, by means of the low energy cluster beam deposition method was reported. A magnetron plasma aggregation cluster source was used to generate tin nanoclusters in a collimated beam. The clusters were deposited on solid substrates and characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When the substrate was directly exposed to the cluster beam vertically, a uniform film with randomly distributed isolated nanoparticles was obtained. The mass of the deposits was controlled in such a way that the equivalent coverage was kept less than one nanoparticle monolayer. The gradient region shows the process of cluster growth from the initial clusters in the free beam to the final ones in the directly exposed region on the substrate.
