Han-shu, mainly written by Ban Gu, was the model of following dynastic standard histories. Just as Zheng Chiao ( a historian in Song dynasty) said, ‘ The ten tables function most importantly in the whole work of Shih-chi. ’ There are profound meanings and extraordinary functions in the ten tables, with which the main outline of all outlines of Shih-chi is constructed. One of my purposes in the plan ‘ a New Study of Ten Tables of Shih-chi ’ which is now being undertaken is to understand the author’s purposes and spirits as well as the principles and methods he used in creating ten tables. TGPM is an outstanding example among the ten tables to show that the author’s thoughts on politics could even be recorded profoundly in a table. There is a table in Hanshu concerning similar themes but with some differences in its forms and purposes. That is TAOM. The texts and form of TAOM deeply influenced both tables and Zhi( 志) of following standard histories. Now in this plan, a careful view of the transformations from TGPM to TAOM will be taken. The authors’ purposes and spirits as well as their principles and methods in creating the two tables will be discussed completely. With this study, the axis of the development of tables in Chinese history would be clear. A special perspective to compare Shih-chi and Han-shu will also be suggested and put in practice. We hope the fruits of this plan will pave the way for historians today to make use of the form of tables to write histories. |
