The major role of USIS in the Crown Colony stemmed from the fact that Hong Kong was the Free world’s major listening post for Communist China. Most of USIS-Hong Kong’s manpower and budget was devoted to producing “corrective” informational materials on Communist China to other USIS posts and other outlets, both on a regional and world-wide basis. Through its Chinese-Language Program, it also sought to communicate to the overseas Chinese of Southeast Asia and the Chinese on Taiwan informational materials which designed to counteract Chinese Communist propaganda. The major source of this research is based on the Foreign Service post files (Record Group 84, Entries of 2688, 2688A, 2689, 2690), that is Classified General Record of the United States Information Service of the Records of the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong, deposited in the National Archives in College Park, Maryland. |
