Nasal antrostomy is now widely adopted as a treatment modality for maxillary sinusitis. In this study, we performed nasal antrostomy and placed a Sino Vent on the maxillary sinuses of 16 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients prior to radiotherapy to investigate if this procedure could prevent the radiation induced maxillary sinusitis. These patients received sequential sinus X ray examinations, sinuscopy and biopsy of the maxillary sinus mucosa before, immediately after and 2 months after radiotherapy. These three examinations were used to evaluate the maxillary sinuses. The results show that Sino Vent insertion could not prevent the development of maxillary sinusitis induced by radiotherapy. On the contrary, it had adverse effect. Besides, we also found that the mucosa of an irradiated maxillary sinus became edematous and polypoid, then it gradually returned to normal after radiotherapy. |
