Abstract
The mechanical properties of the Al2O3-NiAl system are investigated in the present study. Specimens containing 0 to 100 vol% NiAl in Al2O3 were prepared by hot pressing. Both the strength and toughness of the Al2O3-NiAl composites are higher than the values predicted by the rule of mixtures. The grain growth of Al2O3 and NiAl in the composites is constrained by each component. The increase in strength is thus partly attributed to microstructural refinement. The toughness enhancement is contributed by a combination of crack deflection and crack bridging.
