Therefore, in this project an automatic system was implemented for monitoring and control of anesthetic level. A Windows-based graphic user interface was developed in this system to control the infusion pump for drug delivery in addition to measure the blood pressure (BP) and EEG of the rat. The results from more than 30 rats show that the BP decreases as the depth of anesthesia increases. Furthermore, the time interval for a rat from lightly to deeply anesthetized and finally to death increases exponentially with the body weight of the rat. In contrast, it decreases dramatically as the concentration of the anesthetic agent, here sodium pentobarbital, increases. The depth of anesthesia is sensitively reflected by the number of spikes in the EEG waveform. The deeper the anesthesia the fewer the sipkes in EEG. It is suggested that the EEG may be an adequate index for the monitoring of anesthetic level. |
