Biography
Professor Yi-Meei Wang is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Drama and Theatre at National Taiwan University and the first professor of theatrical costume design in Taiwan to hold a doctoral degree. She is a leading scholar and creative practitioner in the fields of theatrical costume design, digital textiles, and costume art, and has long been dedicated to interdisciplinary practices that integrate sustainable fashion, cultural interpretation, and technological innovation. With a broad academic vision and a substantial record of creative achievement, Professor Wang has demonstrated outstanding contributions and deep cultural insight across teaching, research, and artistic practice. Interdisciplinary Creative Practice and International Recognition Yi-Meei Wang is an active practitioner in the fields of theatre, art, and design. She has collaborated with renowned theatre companies such as the Guoguang Opera Company, Godot Theatre Company, and Performance Workshop, designing costumes for productions including Meng Xiaodong, Sunlight after Snowfall, Eileen Chang's Last Evening, The Truth, among others, accumulating experience in more than one hundred stage productions. Notably, Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie has toured internationally for over 300 performances and has been widely acclaimed by audiences. Her costume designs integrate embodied humanities with contemporary technology, fully exemplifying a creative practice of cultural translation. Professor Wang’s interdisciplinary creations have received repeated international recognition, including the Silver Award from the Chicago Textile Center (USA), the Silver Award from the Schenectady Museum (USA), the First Prize (Taipei Award) at the 25th Taipei Fine Arts Exhibition organized by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the First Prize (Fucheng Award) at the 3rd Tainan Fine Arts Exhibition organized by the Tainan Cultural Center, and a Special Award at the Korea International Textile Art Exhibition. In 2011, her work The Spurt of Blood was selected for the Extreme Costume Project at the Prague Quadrennial, making her the only artist from Taiwan to be exhibited, with the work subsequently shown at the National Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic. Academic Background and Research Contributions With dual academic training in theatre arts and design, Professor Wang has long been engaged in research on theatrical costume design theory and digital applications. Her research expertise encompasses Shakespearean costume semiotics, digital virtual character modeling, theatrical costume management modules, and sustainable design methodologies. Her research outcomes have been published in leading journals indexed in TSSCI, THCI, and ESCI, laying a solid theoretical foundation for theatrical costume research in Taiwan. Artistic Exhibitions and Social Engagement In addition to theatrical production, Professor Wang actively participates in domestic and international art exhibitions. Series such as Optical Illusions and Formosan Salmon respond to issues of nature and ecology through a textile-based visual language, demonstrating the cultural depth of sustainable art. Her works have been collected by institutions including the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, and Academia Sinica, reflecting their significant artistic and scholarly value.
