Description
Founded in 1977, the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering (CSIE) started its undergraduate degree program in the College of Engineering, National Taiwan University. The department's master’s degree and doctoral degree programs were established in 1981 and 1984, respectively. Recognizing the growing importance in computer science and the synergy between software and hardware, the department partnered with the Electrical Engineering (EE) Department to form the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) College in 2000. The department currently employs 43 full-time faculty members and 8 part-time faculty members and admits about 120 undergraduate students, 150 master's students, 6 part-time master's students, and 30 doctoral students each year. The total student enrollment includes 484 undergraduate students, 306 master's students, and 129 doctoral students.
As computing brings a new world without boundaries, the department educates students by pushing them out to see and to be seen by the world. The department has a history of training Taiwan-brightest computer science graduates who are able to compete and excel in academic institutions and industries inside and outside Taiwan. The department draws its world-class faculty members from leading institutions throughout the world. Over 80% of the faculty members obtained their doctoral degrees abroad. The department is housed in a modern building. With state-of-the-art facilities and a strong faculty, the department has a leading academic position not only in Taiwan, but also among the top programs world-wide. The department organizes international conferences constantly and has been recognized for its achievements in various international competitions, including ACM ICPC Programming Contest, ACM KDD Cup, and ACM Multimedia Grand Challenge. The research of the department can be categorized into six big research groups: “Systems”, “Network”, "Multimedia & Contents", "Bioinformatics", "Data Science & AI", and “Theory”.
