Description
Family Medicine is a clinical practice that integrates biological medicine with humanity sciences. It emphasizes the care of patients under the bio-psycho-social model and stresses the accessibility and accountability of medical care in order to provide a continuous, coordinative and comprehensive care.
The goals of Family Medicine, when pursued by a medical college, is to train through educational experience the medical students to come to grips with the basic understanding of Family Medicine that includes theory comprehension and primary care practices; when pursued by a hospital, is to nurture Family Medicine physicians for primary care, with core-disciplines being in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetric and Gynecological training; and to offer continuous medical trainings for primary care physicians.
The Department of Family Medicine, College of Medicine of National Taiwan University was established in August 1985, to meet the increased demand by the public for primary care that went along with social-economic progress in Taiwan and to collaborate with the national policy of enhancing primary care for the nation's health.
Considering the current status quo of the medical care insurance and many other looming problems such as aging population, increase in medical costs and waste due to fast development in medical technology, complexity brought about by the sub-divisions of specialties, uneven distributions of physicians and hospitals across the country, evolution of the medical care insurance reimbursement system and family structure etc, it is imperative to call for a strategy in which family practice serves as the basis for primary care, working together with the community hospital or specialist service in medical centers,
in view of a strong public support for a robust health care system where the general publics can benefit from an integrated, convenient and cost-effective medicine care, and encouraged by the fact that the medical network project is coming to its culmination and a referral system that has just been buttressed by a refined National Health Insurance policy, we have a good reason to be optimistic in developing a well-rounded medical care environment in Taiwan.
