Biography
Prof. Suming Chen received his B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from National Taiwan University, M.S. in Bio. & Agricultural Engineering from Rutgers University, USA. He received M.S. in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D. in Bio. & Agricultural Engineering from University of California, Davis, USA. Currently he is a professor in the Department of Biomechatronics Engineering (BME) at National Taiwan University (NTU), and he is also the director of Taiwan Agricultural Mechanization Research and Development Center.
He was the Associate Dean of College of Bioresources and Agriculture, the chair of Department of Bio-Industrial Mechatronics Engineering (BIME), director of the Bioenergy Research Center, and director of Center for Teacher Education at National Taiwan University. His major research areas include automation in agriculture, smart and precision agriculture, nondestructive sensing of biomaterials, computer simulation and control. He is active in ASABE, AABEA, CIAM, TIBM societies, and served as the president of CIAM for four years during 2007-2010.
Prof. Chen has received numerous recognitions for his outstanding performance in his academic career. He has been invited to deliver speeches in international conferences for 22 times including 2 keynote speeches, 2 plenary speeches and 18 invited speeches since 2010. He has received numerous recognitions for his outstanding performance in the academic career. He has received twice the Excellent Teaching Award from National Taiwan University. He received the Academic Research Award from Mingyu Culture Foundation in 1997, and Academic Achievement Award from Chinese Institute of Agricultural Machinery (CIAM), Taiwan in 2002. He has received twelve times the First Rank Award in Scientific Research from National Science Council, Taiwan since 1987. He received an honor as NTU Professor of Lifetime Evaluation Exemption since 2000. He was awarded as The Outstanding Agriculturist by Taiwan District of Kiwanis International in 2015. He received Educational Achievement Award from Chinese Institute of Agricultural Machinery (CIAM), Taiwan in 2018, Academic Achievement Award from Taiwan Institute of Biological Mechatronics (TIBM), Taiwan in 2018, and International Award from Japanese Society of Agricultural Machinery and Food engineers (JSAM), Japan in 2019.
He has authored or coauthored more than 600 journal and conference papers, and has 34 patents and 7 technology transfers. He and his research team were awarded the first price of the NIDays of National Instruments in 2002. Dr. Chen is the Editor-in-Chief of “Journal of Agricultural Machinery”, Co-operating Editor of the journal “Agricultural Mechanization in Asia, Africa, and Latin America”, Editor of “Journal of Taiwan Agricultural Research”, Convener of Editorial Board for “Journal of the Agricultural Association of Taiwan”, and is also the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Engineering in Agriculture, Environment and Food”.
