Description
Patterns of human activities are highly dependent on utilizations of materials. Accordingly, the lives and cultures of human beings are undoubtedly correlated with invention of novel materials and their utilizations. “Materials Science and Engineering” includes the fundamental knowledge of science, materials processing, and applications. The integration of experimental results and basic science is able to optimize the properties of materials, which satisfy diverse requirements of human societies. The innovative materials are also essential for technology developments. Consequently, the MSE integrates basic science for engineering applications and is one of the examples for modern technology integrations.
The materials education and researches at National Taiwan University (NTU) were started in the 1960s by Professors Tze-Hong Loh and Pu-Shi Lu, who established the metals group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME). In August 1982, the Institute of Materials Engineering was established and offered a Master program so as to fulfill national policy of novel technologies. The Ph.D. program was initiated five years later, in 1987. Later on, the institute was renamed the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), emphasizing both the basic and application researches. To cultivate the undergraduates with materials knowledge for our ever-expanding industries, we started to recruit the undergraduate students in 2001 and the Institute was renamed the Institute and Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Currently, our department has five research divisions: metallic materials, polymeric materials, ceramic materials, electronic materials, and materials processing. Our faculty members are diligent and devote themselves in teaching and researching so that we can recruit highly-talented students in Taiwan. So far, our faculty members have accomplished paramount attainments and earned predominant prestige no matter in international or domestic academic arenas. In the 2015 QS World University Ranking, the NTU ranked 41 worldwide in the field of Materials Science.
