While the colonial government promoted Western music in accordance with its colonial policy, new media such as gramophone records, broadcasting and sound films also offered the general public various forms of musical experience. A broad range of news, commentaries and images on those musical events were given in Taiwan Daily News (臺灣日日新報), the longest running newspaper with the highest circulation published in Taiwan during 1898 to 1944, almost the entire colonial period. This historical newspaper provides valuable resources and thus is of significant importance for the study of music history of the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan. In order to collect all the texts and images about music and music life in Taiwan Daily News, in collaboration with Transmission Books & Microinfo Co. (TBMC漢珍數位圖書公司), the Graduate Institute of Musicology intends to construct ‘The Index to Music Resources in Taiwan Daily News’ (臺灣日日新報音樂資料彙編), a database that holds all the items concerning music in the said newspaper, including people, events, venues and objects. The database will be published and promoted by TBMC in the future. Compared with historical studies in other arts and humanities disciplines, the study of music history of Taiwan is still in the primary stage, as more historical facts and figures remain to be discovered. The database constructed by this project will not only serve as an important research tool for studying music history of Taiwan in the Japanese colonial period, but can also be useful for researches on the record industry, cinema, broadcast, theatre or dance of the same period. Furthermore, the criteria for selecting items from the newspaper and the data and file format designed can be a base for future extension of the database when adding materials from other historical newspapers.
