This mini-review presents new researches on the development of aerobic granular processes, extended treatments for complicated pollutants, granulation mechanisms and enhancements of granule stability in long-term operation or storage, and the reuse of waste biomass as renewable resources. A discussion on the challenges of, and prospects for, the commercialization of aerobic granular process is provided. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.Granulation; Prospect; Reuse; Structural stability[SDGs]SDG6[SDGs]SDG7Biological water treatment; Granulation; Stability; Aerobic granules; Biological aggregates; Granulation mechanism; Prospect; Renewable resource; Research trends; Reuse; Structural stabilities; Wastewater treatment; industrial effluent; sewage; waste water; biomass; commercialization; granular medium; mathematical analysis; renewable resource; research work; wastewater; water treatment; aerobic granular process; chemical oxygen demand; priority journal; Review; waste water management; water pollutant; aerobic metabolism; bioreactor; chemistry; research; sewage; trends; waste water; water management; Aerobiosis; Bioreactors; Research; Sewage; Waste Water; Water PurificationAerobic granular processes: Current research trendsjournal article10.1016/j.biortech.2016.01.0982-s2.0-84957927048https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-84957927048&doi=10.1016%2fj.biortech.2016.01.098&partnerID=40&md5=e43c87d13a049323837a02051b4e5fdf
