They may accumulate in organisms, and may induce adverse effects on development, immune system, and liver. Because of these concerns, the most found perfluorochemicals, perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have been included in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants by the United Nations in year 2009, and the Taiwan EPA began to regulate these chemicals since the November, 2010.This project will analyze 8 primary perfluorochemicals, including six perfluoroalkyl carboxylates and two perfluoroalkyl sulfonamides, in 14 types of food matrixes that are usually consumed or easily to accumulate perfluorochemicals. Using the developed method at the first year of this project (Year 2009), samples will be digested in alkaline solutions then extracted using disk-type solid-phase extraction and analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer with isotope-dilution techniques. The project plans to analyze at least ten batches of food samples. This project will survey pregnant women in clinics of obstetrics and gynecology using questionnaires and build up their dietary patterns. By combining the measured concentrations of perfluorochemicals in food, this project will evaluate the intake of these chemicals of the pregnant women, and compares the external exposure with the internal dose determined in the Project II, which will focus on maternal plasma, cord blood, and human milk. This will provide the information on the bioaccumulation of these chemicals and how to extrapolate the exposure to the body burden. This project will also contrast the individual adverse health effects from the Project III and IV, such as liver functions, the growth indices of newborns, the thyroid functions and neurodevelopment of infants and toddlers. In addition, the concentrations of perfluorochemicals in food can be used to estimate the daily intake of the general population using the Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan done by the Department of Health. The information gathered together would be able to estimate the dose-response relationship, and to suggest the tolerable daily intake of perfluorochemicals.
