Channelling in sludge was observed in the high concentration test which enhanced the settling. In low concentration tests, large flee aggregates would form spontaneously from an originally macroscopically homogeneous settling sludge, which also enhanced the settling. Only in the intermediate concentration range could the Richardson-Zaki type correlation be adequately applied. Empirical criteria for differentiation of settling regimes were proposed.Activated sludgeChannellingFloc aggregation formationZone settling[SDGs]SDG6Regimes for zone settling of waste activated sludgesjournal article10.1016/0043-1354(95)00322-32-s2.0-0030201439https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-0030201439&doi=10.1016%2f0043-1354%2895%2900322-3&partnerID=40&md5=9e0341394042e741d2c34b8fd8afca74
