<br> Abstract: This research is focusing on Shirai Shigeyuki, a Japanese Confucianist of Sorai School who was active during the late Edo period. He is selected as an important case to reveal some important perspective and stage of Sorai School in the late Edo period especially based on his Confucianism thoughts and I-Ching studies in this research. It has been years that Shirai Shigeyuki hasn’t received enough attention in and not only within Japan, as a result, remained almost unseen in the view of the Edo Confucianism and East Asian Confucianism studies. Perhaps, it was due to Shirai Shigeyuki’s limited active area during his lifetime. However, his achievement as a Shonai Domain’s official in political, cultural and educational field greatly celebrated the political utilitarian interest of Sorai School. Moreover, his understanding and annotation toward I-Ching could be essential materials to investigate into the performance of Sorai School’s I-Ching studies. In this case, Shirai Shigeyuki is not any less valuable than Dazai Shundai, who is a well-known Chinese classics studies master of Sorai School. Based on this understanding, there are some questions attempted to be answered in this research: how much of Shirai Shigeyuki’s performance of the study on I-Ching is in accordance in and even advanced the Sorai School’s study on I-Ching? To what degree his thoughts and achievement were contributed to the development of Shonai Domain and reveals what kind of aspect of Sorai School in the late Edo period? And, how Chinese studies were spread back then in Japan and how it interacted with Sorai School? Overall, this research is aiming at uncovering a broader and also deeper view of the Confucianism studies of the late Edo period and answering the questions mentioned above according to the research on Shirai Shigeyuki’s work and the existing historical data of Shonai Domain.
