<br> Abstract: This three-year project (2011 ~ 2013) investigates the nature of self-consciousness from interdisciplinary perspectives. The target explanandum is the minimal sense of self-as-subject. A working hypothesis is the distinction between body ownership and mental ownership. Body ownership concerns self-as-object, whether a body part (e.g. a hand) or a whole body is experienced as belonging to me. Mental ownership concerns self-as-subject, whether I represent myself as the unique subject of mental states. Body ownership and mental ownership are distinct, but most researchers consider only body ownership and neglect mental ownership. Mental ownership is an essential aspect of the minimal sense of self. I will investigate (1) the relation between body ownership and mental ownership; (2) whether the current philosophical theories can explain mental ownership. Finally, (3) I will propose my own explanation of mental ownership. Both philosophical and empirical investigations will be conducted in order to achieve a better understanding of the minimal self-consciousness.
