Many complex computing tasks that were deemed inappropriate for client-side devices in the past may be executed by the cloud now. Distributed video coding (DVC), which has lightweight encoder but heavyweight decoder, is one such task that can benefit from cloud computing. By placing the DVC decoder at the cloud and transcoding the video to, say, the H.264 format, the receiving client can avoid supporting the heavyweight DVC decoder.
