There are six possible options of policies that individual countries could adopt regarding HESC research, depending on how they see the ethical issues. The project intends to survey those ethical issues underlying the policies listed as follows: Option 1: No HESC research is permitted. Option 2: Research is permitted only on existing human embryonic stem cell lines. Option3: Research is permitted either on spare embryos no longer needed for reproduction or on embryonic germ cells isolated from the gonadal ridge of an aborted fetus. . Option 4: Research is permitted on embryos created specifically for research purposes through IVF. Option 5: Research is permitted on embryos created specifically for research purposes through human somatic cell nuclear transfer into human eggs. Option 6: Research is permitted on chimera embryos created specifically for research purposes through human somatic cell nuclear transfer into nonhuman eggs. The most basic question is undoubtedly that concerning the moral status of human embryos. Although it is not a new one, it takes on new meaning and urgency in 1998, when the current stem cell controversy began. Based on a systematic analysis of this issue, the project will go on to find out and deal with ethical issues concerning HESC research policy options. Thereby social justice and feministic perspective will be taken into account.
