<br> Abstract: This research project aims at two main subjects: contemporary literary and cultural theories, and Renaissance literature. (1) In the part of theory, my starting point and main source of inspiration is Giorgio Agamben’s recent exploration of sovereignty in his Homo Sacer and State of Exception. According to him, the “undecidable” position of the sovereign inheres in his exceptional externality within the law. Agamben traces back to Roman Law this sovereign topology and exemplifies it by analyzing the crisis of inheritance of Augustus’s throne. Resorting to Agamben’s new interpretive approach and other related theoretical accounts (e.g., those of Michel Foucault and Slavoj Žižek), this research project attempts to re-tackle Ernst H. Kantorowicz’s The King’s Two Bodies, a significant study of medieval political philosophy and early modern monarchy, and engage with related discussions and studies of sixteenth-century British monarchism. (2) In the part of Renaissance literature, the main text of study of this research project is Books III and V of Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, specifically those passages related to sovereignty. In Book III, Spenser models Merlin’s prophecy of the Tudor inheritance crisis on Anchises’s prophecy of the Augustan inheritance crisis in Virgil’s The Aeneid. Based on the above-mentioned theoretical study of sovereignty, this part of my research project aims to expound Spenser’s model of sovereignty or monarchy implicated in those passages. As a contrast, the two models of sovereignty as depicted in Book V will be analyzed: Geryoneo’s tyrannical sovereignty derives its power from the Dragon hidden under the alter, while Arthur’s providential intervention implies a model of sovereignty based on “justice,” the titular virtue of Book V. In addition, Spenser’s A View of the State of Ireland will be taken up, especially in terms of those accounts concerning the measure Britain should take in solving the Irish problem; the purpose is to highlight Spenser’s conception of British imperial rule and to make a comparison with the allegorical referent of the Geryoneo episode: the imperial rule superimposed on the Low Countries by the Spanish sovereign Philip. AgambensovereigntyexceptionmonarchyRenaissance English literatureSpenserThe Faerie QueeneElizabeth IjusticeA View of the State of Ireland統治出於例外:史賓色作品中的君權結構
