Recently, color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) has been used as a substitution for contrast venography (CV) in diagnosing DVT because of its convenience and safety. In this study, the findings of CDU are compared to those of CV in symptomatic DVT patients. Materials and Methods: Twenty-one legs of 21 patients with symptomatic lower limb DVT, having received CDU and CV concomitantly, were included in this study. CDU was assessed on the proximal femoropopliteal (proximal) and the distal calf (distal) veins. The detection rate of CDU was estimated by comparing its findings to those of CV. Results: Of 21 legs studied, DVT was found by both CV and CDU in 17. Based on CV as a standard, the detection rate using CDU was 100% and 75% in proximal and distal DVT, respectively. Conclusion: For detection of lower limb DVT, CDU is reliable.
