Annually, the exotic animal clinic at NTUVH receives up to 200 injured wildlife animals, with the majority being birds followed by mammals and reptiles, some of which are also endangered species. While providing medical care for injured wildlife, we are also able to obtain valuable data such as pathophysiological values of wild animals. Through research, statistics, and analysis, we are able to utilize the data to publish one to three articles in scientific journals annually that contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve wildlife rescue protocols. At the same time, the project cooperates with ecological and animal organizations to provide lectures to the public to bolster awareness of wildlife conservation and rescue efforts. In recent years, the increase in Formosan macaque populations and exposure to humans due to overlapping living ranges has led to interspecific conflicts that have raised public concern. In order to establish long-term control of macaque populations, we began sterilization efforts in 2000 by removing the oviduct and deferent duct. This form of sterilization allows macaques to maintain normal sex hormone function, which is vital to a macaque’s social status and the stability of the group. Furthermore, our usage of an endoscope for salpingectomy is minimally invasive, safe, and with few complications, making it a suitable procedure for wild macaques. This program aimed to implement a model of population control for Formosan macaques by establishing improved anesthesia protocols and surgical procedures. Finally, we published and shared our findings in articles and seminars for others to apply the same model of population control in other parts of the world.
