Theoretical analysis will be attempted to clarify the disparate views of self embedded in the East/West cultural contexts. The proposed two-system views of self prevalent among contemporary Chinese can then be conceptualized and measured. The individual- oriented view of self is similar to the traditional “self-in-relation” construct sanctioned in the Chinese culture, which emphasizes interdependence, role obligations, social responsibility, priority of group goals and collective achievement; in contrast, the social-oriented view of self is similar to the Western construct of “independent and contained self”, which emphasizes independence, uniqueness, personal needs and goals, and striving for self-actualization. The psychometric properties of the specially devised “The Individual- and social-oriented Views of Self Scale” will be examined. Finally, the adaptive functions of the two disparate yet coexisting self systems will also be explored.華人自我觀個人取向自我觀社會取向自我觀Views of Selfindividual- oriented view of selfsocial-oriented view of self「華人本土心理學研究追求卓越」延續計畫-子計畫四:個人取向與社會
