The current biodiversity that we are observing today is coming from a longterm result of both environmental change and/or interactions among diverse species. By uncovering fossils from different geological periods, we could clearly read the evolution of biodiversity, both resulting from the rise of new species or the demise of local species/populations. This proposal aims to unfold the origin of modern vertebrate diversity (including aquatic and terrestrial), which plays critical ecological and evolutionary roles due to their large body sizes, in Taiwan and its surrounding waters. In order to understand the origin of modern vertebrate diversity, this study would focus on describing the occurrence and the turnover along the geological time-line of fossil vertebrates in the past five million years (i.e. Pliocene and Pleistocene, but not excluding fossil vertebrates from the Miocene if found). Fossil vertebrates from the Pliocene and Pleistocene are not uncommon in Taiwan and its surroundings, but mostly lack of proper and updated scientific identification and description systematically hinders a full understanding of the faunal turnover in the past leading to the emergence of modern vertebrate diversity. During the course of this research proposal, I will be officially describing remains of vertebrates lived in the past of Taiwan and surrounding waters, publishing research papers in the international journals, and then shedding new light on the origin and faunal succession of vertebrate diversity in and around Taiwan.化石「古」生物多樣性脊椎動物上新世更新世fossilpaleo-biodiversityvertebratePliocenePleistocene重建台灣失落的古脊椎動物多樣性
