The literature of traditional Chinese medicine indicates that Chinese yam is a superior herb with a number of therapeutic effects, such as anti-diarrhea. In addition, Chinese yam is utilized as a tonic herb to restore and enhance the function of the immune and gastrointestinal system. Chinese yam contains a variety of nutrients that are generally believed to be of nutritional value, but are unlikely responsible for its biological activities. Previous studies have demonstrated that diosgenin, the major steroidal sapogenin contained in Chinese yam, exhibited a number of pharmacological effects. For example, the applicant has recently reported that diosgenin administration enhanced antigen-specific IgG2a and interferon (IFN)-γ expression in ovalbumin-sensitized mice, suggesting an enhancing effect on T helper (Th)1 cell-mediated immunity. Based on these findings and the applicant’s preliminary results showing the attenuation of allergen-induced inflammatory responses and tissue damage in the gut, the proposed 3-year project aims to investigate the immunological mechanisms responsible for the anti-allergic effect of diosgenin against food allergy.山藥山藥皂苷元食物過敏免疫小鼠Chinese yamdiosgeninfood allergyimmunemice山藥皂元抗食物過敏作用之機轉研究
