Chemical constituents of its leaf essential oils are similar to those of famous Cinnamomum cassia bark oils, so the potential utilizations of C. osmophloeum are worthy of exploration. Results from our preliminary studies demonstrated that leaf essential oils from C. osmophloeum had excellent antifungal, antimite, antimosquito larve, antitermite and antibacterial activities. However, to the best of our knowledge there are very limited prior studies on the bioactivities of extractives from C. osmophloeum. Therefore, the objectives of this project are to evaluate the antioxidant activity of secondary metabolites from the leaf of C. osmophloeum, to identify the chemical structures of antioxidant compounds, and to understand the biosynthesis mechanisms of secondary metabolites. Through this study, it is expected that antioxidant compounds isolated from C. osmophloeum leaf extracts be of great potential as medicines for disease control or as raw materials for synthesizing useful analogues in industry.
