There are about 400 pieces of Taiwanese artifacts preserved in the British Museum. These artifacts could be relating to two major resources: (1) those pioneer travelers, consolers, or missionaries who arrived in Taiwan around the second half of the 19th century and became famous figures in the field of Taiwanese history, such as Robert Swinhoe and William Campell, etc; (2) a great international exhibition-- Japan-British Exhibition -- held in Shepard’s Bush, White City, London in 1910. More than 300 artifacts brought from Taiwan for the exhibition were later collected by the British Museum. Thus, this year’s project will focus on creating a cooperative venue and making intensive study of Taiwanese collections in the British Museum. Through checking archives, analyzing objects, taking photos, developing digital databank and internet connections, we can, on the one hand, enhance our knowledge on early Taiwanese material life; one the other hand, create a powerful network for retrieving information of overseas Taiwan collections.
