The whole work expounds and criticises respectively the thoughts of the three philosophical schools in the Hellenistic age, i.e. the Epicureanism (books 1 and 2), the Stoicism (books 3 and 4), and Antiochus of Ascalon of the old Academy (book 4 and 5). The importance of this book in the history of western ancient philosophy is five-fold: Firstly, by virtue of this book the structures and characteristics of the thoughts of the three schools can be seen in the modern eyes. Moreover the criticisms of them in the book can also show their shortcomings in ethical reasoning ; Secondly, Cicero’s vehement criticism of Epicurus and his school is sound and reasonable, or based upon his personal prejudices, which is a problem worth our attention. Thirdly, the detailed discussion of the Stoicism in this book provides us with a clear understanding of the Stoic ethical thought. Fourthly, De Fininus provides the essential information for the reconstruction of the Antiochean syncretism in ethical thought. Finally, Cicero’s criticisms of all three schools illustrate the practices of the skepticism of the New Academy in the Roman Republic. There is no annotated version of De Finibus in Chinese.西塞羅至善伊比鳩魯學派快樂斯多葛學派德性自然逍遙學派柏拉圖老學院新學院懷疑主義安提歐庫斯CiceroFinal EndThe EpicureanismPleasureThe StoicismVirtueNatureThe PeripateticsPlato’s AcademyThe Scepticism of the New AcademyAntiochus of Ascalon西塞羅的《論善與惡的界限》譯注計畫(1/2)
