<br> Abstract: Retour interpreting, a.k.a. into-B interpreting, refers to interpreting from one`s A language (mother tongue) into B language (second or foreign language). The increased market demand for into-B interpreting has driven increased training demand in this direction. Interpreting trainers have suggested accumulating fixed phrases and formulaic expressions in one`s B language to reduce production effort during retour. Scholars in the field of second-language acquisition also underscore the importance of learning and using formulaic sequences because of the processing advantages they offer, their ubiquity in spoken language, and one`s identity in a professional community they signal. However, examples of formulaic expressions given by interpreting trainers are mainly based on personal experiences and lack systematic description. This research project aims to empirically identify and analyze frequently co-occurred fixed word combinations (lexical bundles) used in authentic conference settings for two purposes: 1) describe conference English as a register; and 2) develop materials for teaching conference interpreting into English as a B language. This research project will involve two stages. First, corpus-driven approach will be adopted to identify 4- word lexical bundles that meet certain frequency and distribution thresholds in an estimated one-million-word EU Conference English Corpus composed of transcribed speeches held or interpreted in English during European Parliament Plenary Sessions. The second stage will involve structural and functional analysis of lexical bundles. The structural categorization will be based on lexical bundles` grammatical features, while functional categorization on their pragmatic functions. This structural and functional analysis will describe register characteristics of EU conference English. Furthermore, functional categorization will serve as foundation for developing materials for teaching interpretation into English as a B language for conference interpreting purposes. The findings of this project will contribute to empirical investigation of conference interpreting, into-B interpreting pedagogy, corpus research on spoken English, and English for Specific Purposes.反向口譯會議口譯專業英語歐盟口語語篇語料庫驅動研究詞串Retour interpretingEnglish for conference interpreting purposesEU spoken discourseCorpus-driven researchLexical bundles會議口譯專業英語:歐盟會議英語之詞串研究
