Transitional justice in Taiwan has tangled with local political context for decades. With a bumpy start since the 80S, it has now burgeoned to focus on, beside the basic judicial measures, reparative communication and networking through arts and cultural creations. Within the impact of international tension and the support from governmental cultural policies, transitional-justice theater works have grown by both quality and quantity. Compared to the previous works that resort to realistic and sentimental narrative to restage history, the productions in the recent years turn to abstract, multimedia, metatheoretical, transdisciplinary, and local participatory measures in order to mobilize collective empathy and social interaction. In the light of this, by investigating into the rehearsal processes, narrative structures, and operative apparatuses of selected representative works of this genre, this project expects to highlight that transitional-justice theater in Taiwan, on one side, problematizes the established discursive framework of White Terror by prototyping historical interpretations on stage and, on the other side, embodies the difficulty, if not impossibility, of democratic collaboration, history representation, and reflexive operation through the uses of participatory arts and immersive theater methods. Transitional-justice theater in Taiwan tends not to emphasize accountability clarification or resources distribution through decisive lens but to highlight the necessity of constant retrospection during theater production. As part of the activist movement, transitional-justice theater relieves the impulse of curing historical traumas and perceives participants’ negative feelings as trigger of social support alliance.
