It is assumed that, along with the time flow post the devastating 921 Earthquake, the adjustment patterns of those who are at higher risk for posttraumatic stress disorder and/or posttraumatic illnesses may fluctuate as well. Extant literature suggests that early interventions may prevent the victims from developing more severe problems. Moreover, better and more thorough assessment may lead to more specific intervention programs for survivors at risk. Thus, it is of great importance to explore the prevalence rate of PTSD & PTI, and its related factors such as adjustment patterns and problem characteristics, and psycho-etiological factors. In order to better our understanding of post-disaster psychopathology and extend the scope of intervening approaches for the high-risk, a five-year research project will be designed. In the first year, it is proposed to study on the survivors at risk with respect to the baseline of their symptom manifestations, interpersonal adjustment, and psychological functioning. About four hundred adult subjects will be recruited, based on their score pattern of previous studies (i.e., Chen, Hung, Lin, & Tseng, 2000, 2002; Chen, Lin, Hung, & Tseng, 2000; Wu et al., 2000b) and special referral from local mental health professionals. In the consecutive 4 years, a follow-up assessment will be proposed, in that further exploration of risk factors as well as intervention program and its effects will be examined. It is hoped that a more specific prevention/intervention programs to reduce the risk for PTSD & PTI and improve life quality for adult survivors at risk will be generated based on the present five-year prospective study. Moreover, psychometrically sounded tools for research and clinical use in trauma psychology will be examined and suggested. As the fourth-year research, the proposed study, based on findings from previous studies, aims to explore traumatic memory and its potential association with PTSD and trauma-related emotions. Meanwhile, it is planned to reassess psychiatric symptoms, subjective physical and psychological health status, quality of life, and changes of interpersonal relationships. The proposed study will recruit those who continue from previous year as candidates for follow-up, including adult residents living in Pu-Li Town and suburban prefabricated houses (N=191). In-depth interview, psychological assessment, and related scales will be administered at individual base. Specific individual and/or group interventions will then be designed in order to reduce the risk for PTSD and related problems.
