An axial (discrete) heat flux distribution corresponding to a neutral stability region where nucleate and film boiling can coexist steadily is identified. Below such a heat flux distribution, nucleate boiling mode is more stable. Above this distribution, film boiling mode becomes more stable. An equal-area criterion based on difference between bottom heat flux and surface boiling heal flux and the surface temperature date is employed for interpreting the experimental data, and reasonable agreement is obtained. The differences between average and real transition boiling curves are discussed as well.Experimental study on multi-mode methanol flow boilingjournal article2-s2.0-0030394958https://www.scopus.com/inward/record.uri?eid=2-s2.0-0030394958&partnerID=40&md5=2eeff5fb4d228f9f331f6f0e3393f9a7
