Aims of NTU’s Freshman Chinese Courses To develop outstanding language skills to be used in everyday life and special job applications; and to cultivate the humanistic outlook of students, integral to their development of personality. 2. Causes for the Improvement Plan Since the students’ control of language is steadily weakening, coupled with a neglect of humanistic learning, and also because overseas Chinese and international students desire special teaching methods tailored to their needs, we have drafted this plan to improve the quality of freshman Chinese courses as follows, with due notice of the unique opportunities offered by the internet. 3. Outline of the Improvement Plan (1) Chinese Proficiency Test for Overseas Chinese and International Students Because the control of language differ greatly among these students, usual courses for them suffer a loss of depth on the teacher’s part and poor feedback on the students’ part. Accordingly, this plan proposes a “Chinese Proficiency Test” for them at freshman year to differentiate among different levels of learning and to improve on teaching efficiency. Students are assigned different study routes according to test results: Overseas Chinese students who have not passed the test should take the special class designed for them and are also required to participate in the “Chinese Help Class for Overseas Chinese Students”; Overseas Chinese students who passed the test take the usual courses now assigned for overseas and international students, at least two classes of which should be provided per college; International students who failed the test should participate in a Chinese help class in the Language Center at NTU for a year, the funding of which is provided by the Ministry of Education or NTU. After passing this course they should take up the Chinese course in a “Special Chinese Class for International Students” the next year; International students who passed the test take the usual courses or the special course above according to test grades. (2) Freshman Chinese Course Webpage and “Reading Classics” Project i. To facilitate information and encourage diversity, this plan shall also integrate previous websites (Freshman Chinese Course – Teachers’ Website, “Reading Classics” Project Website and Freshman Chinese Course Forum) into a multi-functional platform of “Freshman Chinese Course Website, Department of Chinese Literature”. To encourage participation and creative writing, we shall also maintain a creative writing section on the site, which should include an uploadable interactive page for freshman to offer their own writings off course, and assigned writings in class recommended by teachers. There will also be a review committee every year to choose excellent works uploaded during the previous year and some prize money will be offered accordingly. ii. Our department’s previous “Reading Classics” Project shall continue its course and work to promote a better environment and atmosphere for reading activities: (i) The Classics List consists of both writings from the classical and modern/contemporary period, totaling 31 works. (ii) Maintenance of Special Course Forums, providing a platform for discussion and feedbacks or questions from students. (iii) Hiring of teaching assistants to lead study groups for each work. The above measures aim at improving the language skills and humanistic outlook of students, and provide better means for efficient teaching of overseas Chinese and international students.國文經典閱讀Chinese98年度提升教學品質計畫/中文系/提升大一國文教學品質
