<br> Abstract: This project provides an epistemological review of how past social science and historiography research on China in general and Chinese politics in particular has affected the way postcolonial scholars approach identity politics in East Asia. These postcolonial scholars come from Japan, Korea, India, Australia and Singapore. An epistemological review of this sort enables the research community to locate the past research in non-English each in its historical context. When this is done, the local scholarship can legitimately develop theoretical perspectives embedded in indigenous discourse. This current project begins with the assumption that China research and the image of China are mutually constituted. Political, social and economic relations between China and other communities affect the research of China in those communities. This project collects data of these complicated relations and reviews the evolution of the China agenda in each different community, which refers to the evolution of methodology, subject matter, curriculum, student enrollment as well as research funding. There are five sub-projects dealing with the oral history of senior China scholars concerning their career path, the sources of funding, the change and continuity in research agenda, the change and continuity in curriculum and the approach to managing cross-national research. To execute this project, the project director will call for interviewees from each local community that meet with the goal of the project and, accordingly, this project will eventually serve as a global platform for each research community to exchange their self-critical reviews.
