More recently, some flavanones and chalcones with prenyl or geranyl groups have been identified in hops and beers, and their biological activities of these compounds have been shown to possess various anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-angiogenic, anti-melanogenic, anti-osteoporotic and anti-carcinogenic effects in the literature. Acne vulgaris and dandruff are the common skin diseases. The proliferation of bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes, causing primary or secondary skin infections and follicular keratinization as well as inflammation, and Malassezia furfur, playing important roles in seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and dandruff (SD/D). To overcome the potential risk of adverse effects and antibiotic resistance from prescription medications, traditional herbal medicines have been extensively studied as alternative treatments for many diseases. This study is aimed to demonstrate the anti-microbial growth of P. acnes and M. furfur by the hop in cell model.
