<br> Abstract: The past decade has seen a dramatic growth in patent applications in many patent offices (Tsai 2008). The development of worldwide patent filings has stimulated the demand for patent translations to file patents in foreign patent systems for patent right protection and international visibility. In order for an application to be successful, the quality of the translation is of crucial importance. The investigation of English translations of Chinese patent abstracts conducted by Tsai (2010) has found that patent language displays high frequencies and low varieties in word usage. This is also indicative of high repetitions, of which some can be redundant. ‘Pleonasm’, or the use of more words than necessary to express a concept, is often carried over from the Chinese source text into the English translations, which sometimes resulted in sub-standard translation quality. The proposed study aims to observe the necessity and the types of pleonastic words in patent texts and patent translations by compiling a comparable corpus and a parallel corpus. This pioneering compilation of comparable and parallel patent text/translation corpora is of great significance, as the appropriateness of translations cannot be fully commented on if there is nothing to compare them with. With a parallel corpus, the use of pleonastic language in both Chinese and English can be further investigated and analyzed. The collection of a comparable corpus compares texts of the same language, one with English as the original, and the other with English as the translated text. A bigger range of data would also make findings more generalizable and facilitate systematic analysis of pleonasms in patent texts. The investigation of pleonastic language in patent texts with the use of corpora can serve as an indicator for improvements on patent translations, so that translators can be guided to provide a more acceptable translation. The findings may also contribute to patent translation pedagogy and enrich translation literature.專利翻譯贅詞語料庫譯文品質patent translationpleonasmcorpustranslation quality新進教師學術研究計畫-文學院-中文專利摘要英譯贅字研究
