It has long been debated whether semantic information can be extracted in the absence of detection or identification of the stimuli. Controversies arise mainly due to the difficulty in exploring mental processes that are completely devoid of consciousness. Our previous studies (Yeh, He, & Cavanagh, in press; Yang & Yeh, 2011) used the paradigms of visual crowding and continuous flash suppression and demonstrated clearly unconscious semantic processing without conscious identification and detection, respectively. Following these behavioral measures, we aim to explore their brain mechanisms in the current project. Study 1 will examine the semantic network in the brain for crowded words and isolated words; validated behavioral measures will be used to ensure the parameters used can indeed differentiate unconscious vs. conscious perception of the words in the crowded and isolated words conditions respectively. Study 2 will use the continuous flash suppression paradigm to further examine brain mechanisms of semantic priming with invisible prime words. Study 3 will examine the role of attention on unconscious semantic processing under crowding and continuous flash suppression. Results are expected to shed light on the existence, extent, and neural substrates of unconscious semantic processing, and the comparison with comparable visible conditions will reveal to us the nature of consciousness.語意處理視覺擁擠持續閃現抑制注意力空間線索semantic processingcrowdingcontinuous flash suppressionattentionspatial cueingUnconscious Semantic Processing under Visual Crowding and Continuous Flash Suppression
