<br> Abstract: At the start of the 21st century, the focus of research on classical literature was clearly on integration and going beyond traditional scopes and fields. Because perspectives are becoming more diversified, an understanding of literature that is both interdisciplinary and international is needed. Only when we have traversed beyond traditional scopes of research can a fuller, more concrete tradition be integrated with the present age. Therefore, the purpose behind this research project is to select a topic that has the potential to merge with other disciplines and to have continued advances in this field that has already made many important achievements—and even more importantly, the topic must be of such a nature so as to lead to interaction and exchange between related fields both here and abroad. With this ideal in mind, colleagues in the Department of Chinese Literature at NTU who research literature have formulated the following research topic: “The Creation and Transformation of Literary Paradigms.” This is, in the new trend of rewriting the history of literature and the history of literary criticism, a topic that lends itself to even more of a meta-analytical approach. It also has the potential to account for such perspective shifts as moving analysis beyond the text to the environment and circumstances surrounding the text, the authoritative nature of words, etc. that have come in the wake of the deconstruction movement. In this context, the rewriting of literary history is no longer merely an act of delineating “literature paradigms” as they are sometimes termed; rather, the focus is now on “How are these paradigms formed?” Therefore, more in depth discussion will be conducted regarding such issues as the mixing of reality and fiction, the growth of authoritative discourse, the correspondence between literary forms and symbolic systems, the tug-of-war between “literary norms” and “authoritative norms,” and the dialogue between personal (private) and collective (public). This project aims to first have professors in the department arrive at a consensus and mutual understand through active discussion. Then, on the basis of this consensus, we will attempt to push our understanding further by integrating research from various fields, both here and abroad. This will enable Taiwan’s “local” research on classical literature to move to a new level, one with a global outlook.
