Considering the developmental issues faced by most adolescents, it is reasonable to ask: whether their ethnic identity and perceived social discrimination will affect their self-esteem and life adaptation? On the basis of knowledge provided by research on aboriginal and interracial marriage children, this study attempts to: 1) examine the life adaptation of children aged 10- 15 in these families; 2) study the influence of ethnic identity and perceived discrimination on their self-esteem and life adaptation; 3) compare differences between mixed heritage and single heritage children in terms of their self-esteem and life adaptation; 4) examine the change over time, and factors that influence such change; 5) examine how teachers and parents of these students perceive their life adaptation; 6) provide suggestions for the establishment of related social policies. This research will be conducted in three years. The study population is comprised of 1) children and youth aged 10 to 15, with one parent from the South Eastern countries (except Singapore); 2) one of their parents; and 3) their school teachers. Using the multi-stage cluster sampling method, the sample size of children is about 2,300 (1,150 are children of new immigrant families, 1,150 are their peers from non-immigrant families). It is calculated with a confidence interval of 95% and a standard error of 0.03, as well as an estimated 10% of deduction in sample size during the follow-up. As for the parents and teachers sample, we will use the matched sample. Therefore, 1,150 parents and about 600 teachers will participate in this study. In-depth interviews with 15-20 teachers will also be done to provide more information. Data of students will be collected by the self-reported method, with a research assistant on site to offer assistance. Data of parents and teachers will be collected by self-administered questionnaires. STATA 9.0 and LISREL 8.71 will be used to analyze quantitative data. Qualitative data will be analyzed by the template analysis style. The results of this research can provide suggestions for the development of related social policies to this population.新移民家庭子女生活適應族群認同children of new immigrant familieslife adaptationethnic identity就讀國小高年級與國中階段新移民家庭子女的生活適應狀況調查
