Motor vehicle accidents frequently occur and often cause high death toll and injuries. Victims of MVA may be very likely to develop acute and/or posttraumatic stress symptoms and/or disorders. Existing self-concepts may be impacted by traumatic event, leading to the discrepancies among different self-states. Such discrepancies may probably in terns play as an important factor in the development of psychological distress in general and posttraumatic symptoms/disorder in specific. In addition, the current self-defining memories can be viewed as the autobiographical memories that mostly reflect the identity of the individual. Self-concepts that individuals report upon enquiry may be related to autobiographical memories that individuals remember. Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or with more PTSD symptoms may report more negative, trauma-related memories, and their memories may be associated with greater discrepancies among various self-states. Moreover, personal dispositions such like neuroticism/extroversion and resilience may be influential in this etiological path to PTSD related problems. In testing the above hypotheses, this three-year research project, taking MVA as example of human-made trauma, plans to use self-report scales and interview in a prospective research with multiple assessments in various time points post the MVA trauma. It is hope that, by exploring the plausible association of dispositional and resilient factors, self-defining memories, discrepancies of self-states, and posttraumatic stress symptoms or disorders, we will better understand of the psychopathological links between trauma and PTSD, and their risk and protective factors as well. Furthermore, it will be more likely to shed light in our search for remedies to help the traumatized individuals to integrate her/his own “self states” in order to actualize empowerment in clinical application.車禍意外創傷後壓力症狀自我界定記憶自我落差motor vehicle accidentposttraumatic stress symptomsself-defining memoryself-discrepancyTraumatic Memory, Self-States, Resilience, and PTSD--- An Exploratory Study on Trauma of Motor Vehicle Accident
