During the process of Chinese modernization, he is devoted to cultural exchanges and Reformist Movement. The purpose of this project is to study this remarkable talent and the interactions of Wang and the intellectuals of the Meiji Restoration such as Nakamura Masanao, Shigeno Yazutusgu, and Oka Rokumon. Among the modern Chinese intellectuals who declare for absorbing western knowledge, Wang identifies himself with Yuan Wei. In comparison with You-Wei Kang and Zun-Xian Huang, he considers himself a vanguard. Going abroad is a turning point in Wang’s life. His belief in making country strong through political reform attracts the attention of the intellectuals of the Meiji Restoration. His opinions of Japan also change after he arrives there. When Wang left for Japan in 1879, the Meiji Restoration just began. Japanese were absorbed in studying western civilization in order to introduce reforms. Wei’s two books, Sheng Wu Ji and Hai Guo Tu Zhi, were brought to Japan at the late shogunate period. Wei’s central ideas in coast defense, “to learn from foreign tribes their special skills to subdue them,” awakened many Japanese intellectuals and politicians. Wang’s Pu Fa Zhan Ji (Commentaries on the Franco-Prussian War) also became an essential reference for Japanese people in and out of government to understand the world situation. The main topics of this project are as follows: 1.How deep the intellectuals of the Meiji Restoration are influenced by Wang, and what are the real conditions of the changes both in Japanese history of thought and in Chinese history of thought. 2.How do the intellectuals of the Meiji Restoration recognize the importance of western knowledge through Wang? How do they absorb western knowledge? What are their comments on Wang? 3.What new theories does Wang bring back from Japan? What are their influences?王韜中村正直重野安繹岡鹿門魏源《海國圖志》Tao WangNakamura MasanaoShigeno YazutusguOka RokumonYuan WeiHai Guo Tu Zhi王韜與日本維新人物思想變遷關係之研究
