However, from centuries of anthropological and historical researches, we find island societies are actually quite open and dynamic. Islanders are often actively engaged in travelling and exploring new space, and frequently establish long-distance social and commercial relationships across huge areas of water. Island societies are remarkably inceptive to outsiders and often develop varieties of means and cultural institutions to appropriate and transform external influences. This research group starts from this premise and tries to develop a socio-historical framework to study the island societies in and around Taiwan. We put particular emphasize on two types of colonialism (Japan and Western) experienced by the island peoples of Taiwanese aborigines, Micronesian, and Chinese Diaspora. We want to study how different modernities were constructed by colonial governments and regional market systems, and how the peoples in different islands reacted differently to this common legacy; and how do these experiences affected the daily life of common peoples.島嶼殖民主義大洋洲台灣原住民日本殖民主義南島民族AustranesianTaiwannese AboriginesMicronesiancolonialismJapanese Colonialism《臺灣與世界對話》島嶼世界的形成與流動:在南島與東亞之間
