<br> Abstract: This research project includes one general topic and three specific topics, with the aim of finishing six English journal articles in three years. The general topic is: “Major Features of the Buddhist Philosophy of Consciousness.” The three specific topics include: (1) What is the precise meaning of the Buddhist claim that “A true cognition must go without vikalpa?” This is further divided into three sub-topics; (2) The ontological dimension: conceptualization and the Three-nature Theory; (3) Meditation and language as the cognition with vikalpa. Included among the philosophical issues to be addressed are: (A) To argue that the Buddhist notion of vikalpa has a much broader scope than the notion of conceptualization in Western philosophy. (B) To explore the roles played by such mental concomitants (caitta) as feelings (vedanā) and searching (vitarka and vicāra) in cognition, and, based on the results thereof, firstly to provide a new interpretation of the notion of self-awareness (svasaṃvedana or svasaṃvitti) by Dignāga (ca. 480-540 CE), and, secondly, to do a comparative study between the Buddhist position and contemporary discussions about self-awareness and attention. (C) To locate Dignāga’s claim that “Sense perception is without kalpanā” in the recent debates between John McDowell and Hubert Dreyfus, and investigate how Dignāga might have disagreed with McDowell. (D) To investigate, along the line of the Three-nature theory, whether Yogācāra would support McDowell’s idea that the structure of the world is conceptualized. (E) To examine the role played by language in a meditative state. John McDowellPhilosophy of Consciousnessvikalpamental concomitants (caitta)DignāgaTheory of Three NaturesJohn McDowell106年度 【 佛教意識哲學中的分別與無分別認知 】
