Large collections of historical information, old maps, reports on archeological sites and ecological investigation have been preserved. There are, however, many unorganized maps, scattering around in governmental offices, libraries and historical journals. This research is part of the digital museum project initiated by the National Science Council (NSC), which aims to establish ¡§ Taiwan Cultural and Ecological Maps.¡¨ GIS integrates database created from various areas, such as history, geography, anthropology, botany and information science. This database will provide fundamental information for interdisciplinary research on environmental changes and cultural developments in Taiwan. The digital museum is divided into four sections: Land Information Museum, Cultural Environment Museum, Historical Maps Museum and Botanical Ecology Museum. The four theme Museums are further divided into various sections. For instances, Land Information Museum contains Topographic Maps (1/50,000), time maps, and thematic maps, technological maps and historical maps of Taiwan. The Cultural Environment Museum introduces pre -historical and aborigine cultures. Botanical Ecology Museum contains ecology, botany and specimens. The Archive of Taiwan photos on the website enables users to integrate different thematic maps by themselves, further discovering the relations between natural environmental factors and human factors. The endeavor of the first year has set up the framework of the digital museum while future enrichment of contents relies on further supports from various sources. In the future, we anticipate to develop academic researches from the present research, and to turn the Internet information into teaching resources for K-12 education in Taiwan.
