Children will be asked to judge if two Chinese characters are related in meaning. Experimental materials will be classified as three types of character pairs: closely related pairs, distantly related pairs, and unrelated pairs (Hue, et al., 2005). This is a two-year project. The first year plan is to conduct behavioral studies of semantic association in Chinese for children. Children’s character association will be able to real the developmental changes of semantic processing, as suggested by previous findings (Chou et al., 2006a; 2006b). The second year plan is to examine the neural correlates of semantic association in Chinese for children, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The relationship between behavioral data and brain images will be helpful to understand the functional architecture of word recognition systems for written Chinese characters. The predicted behavioral results are that the reaction times of closely related pairs are faster as compared to distantly related pairs, which in turn are faster than the unrelated pairs. The predicted regions will be that increasing age was associated with greater activation in the left middle temporal gyrus and inferior parietal lobule, suggesting that older children have a more elaborated semantic representational system and more effective semantic integration.語意關聯功能性核磁共振造影年齡效果semantic associationfMRIage effects中文字語意處理的神經機制在發展上的變化
