Not surprisingly, the oceanic environment, including currents, water mass as well as biogeochemical parameters there is complicated as well due to the meet of the strong Kuroshio coming from south, the outflow from the Taiwan Strait and the Changjiang diluted water from north in winter. The in-situ measurements conducted in the projects KEEP two decades ago and the LORECS recently revealed not only the physical structures such as the “counter current” and the “cold dome” but also the biogeochemical influences from the operation of the Three Gorge Dam, the dust storm from the northern China and typhoons. Along with these remarkable accomplishments, more uncertainties, e.g. the presence of the high frequency internal waves, the movement of Kuroshio’s axis and its relationship with typhoons and the mechanism for the upwelling, are generated. With these uncertainties in mind, this study aims to study the generation of internal tides/waves, the influence of Kuroshio on their behavior, the forced and spontaneous variations of the Kuroshio, and the biogeochemistry variability related to the complex oceanic and atmospheric factors in the sea off the northeastern Taiwan.
