Ecosystems provide multiple services upon which WEF provisioning ultimately depends. Changing climate and growing population exacerbate demands on water, energy and food resources and related ecosystem services. In order to achieve sustainability in all three sectors, while also protecting vital ecosystems and the services they provide, sectoral approaches are no longer sufficient in solving complex WEF problems. The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem services (often termed the WEFE) Nexus is an approach that offers such integrated solutions. It integrates solutions regarding trade-offs and synergies of interdependencies and interactions of various resources and sectors. This research begins with assessing ecosystem services in the greater Taipei. The methods are followed by results on correlation analysis and Self-Organizing Map that identify interactions and trade-offs between WEF systems and the fundamental ecosystem services that support them. The research ends with applying multiple regression, graphically weighted regression, and principal components analysis that investigate spatiotemporal WEF nexus in response to ecosystem services changes. It will highlight challenges faced and opportunities for cooperation to achieve water, energy and food sustainability while protecting ecosystem services.
