However, finding an efficient and economic hydrogen production route is still a challenging task to date. The obstacle may be solved by the use of more efficient photocatalysts and more effective charging separation routes, based on the information provided by in-situ observations. We therefore expect breakthrough on this topic in this proposal. In this joint proposal between the teams from NTU and from Academia Sinica, we would like to develop the efficient photocatalytic materials and systems based on novel two-dimensional (2D) atomic layered materials such as graphene, TMDs and metal oxides nanosheets. The fundamental mechanisms of these novel photocatalytic 2D materials will be also investigated through the state-of-the art analysis based on in-situ transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy and carrier dynamic analysis techniques. The final goal of this proposal is to design the novel atomic layered photocatalytic heterostructures for efficient solar to fuel conversion through the deep fundamental understanding through in-situ observation.
