Through a neurocognitive approach, this project aims to study the visual attention and visual association of digital media designers, and the influences of different text combinations, music styles, and brain development activities on designer creativity. The research team will also analyze the aforementioned topics by comparing designers with different levels of creativity and professional experience, as well as provide feedbacks to design education programs regarding the instructional and guidance strategies, and disseminate research outcomes through international publications, academic lectures, and creativity enriching workshops. During the first year (2017/08-2018/07), the research team will conduct a neurocognitive experiment targeting on the visual attention and visual association of digital media designers using the artworks of Jean-François Millet, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró as visual stimuli. Thirty professional designers and thirty student designers will be invited to participate in the ectroencephalography (EEG) experiment. The results will outline the differences of visual attention and association between experienced and novice designers. The top and bottom one-third of the research participants (20 for each) will then be divided into higher- and lower-creativity groups for further neural comparisons. During the second year (2018/08-2019/07), the team will use different text combinations and music styles to substitute the artworks as stimuli for provoke design creativity. The text combinations will consist of short expression, popular poem, adjectives with the same concept, and adjectives with the disparate concept. The musical stimuli will comprise four distinct styles, namely country music, rock n’ roll, soul music, and classical music. The research team will invited 30 professional designers and 30 student designers to participate this experiment. They will also be divided into higher- and lower-creativity groups for further comparisons. During the third year (2019/08-2020/07), the research team will select and localize several internationally renowned brain development activities, and adopt them into an EEG experiment. The comparisons between experienced and novice designers, as well as higher- and lower-creativity groups will be performed and analysed. In addition, synthesizing the accumulated experiences, the team will plan and host several creativity enriching workshops to promote and extend the research outcomes. The accomplishment of this project is expected to have the following contributions: establishing the research framework and neurocognitive approach of design creativity; understanding the visual attention and visual association, as well as the influences of text combinations, music styles, and brain development activities on the designers with different levels of creativity and professional experience; building up predictive models of multiple stimuli and brain development on design creativity; developing and conducting creativity enriching workshops to extent the research outcomes; providing strategic recommendations for talent development of design creativity and further development of creativity industry; publishing research outcomes in the international conferences and prominent journals to enhance Taiwan’s academic national power; and improving diverse design education programs, innovating the domestic cultural and creative industry, and promoting the national competitive advantages.
